Built at the time of the Napoleonic Wars to defend the River Mersey. Fort Perch battery housed 100 men and sixteen 32 pounders which faced the Black Rock Channel. The channel being the only way up the Mersey at the time some 900 yards away and well within range of the battery's 32 pounders
